Prolapse The Italian Flag Raritan
A British sextet from Leicester with two vocalists(Mick Derrick and Linda Steelyard),the Prolapse did not fit well in thevain Brit-pop scene of the 1990s. They embodied pretty much everything that Brit-pop aimed to erase: neuroses, tensions, insecurity. In keeping with the British ritual, their career was launched by the EPs Crate (Cherry Red, 1994),Pull Thru Barker (Cherry Red, 1994) andDoorstop Rhythmic Bloc (Cherry Red, 1994), three vitriolic indictments ofpop music that resorted to abominable harmonic practices to demolish extantmusical taboos.Pointless Walks To Dismal Places (Cherry Red, 1994) was no lessfrantic, chaotic and dissonant. While the singers intone their psychopatic call and response, the guitars andthe rhythm section hammer around casually. If the singles had presented a group ofmusicians with a wild imagination, the album showed them intent to carvingan artistic persona somewhere betweenSonic Youth,Pere Ubu andFall.
Backsaturday (Lissy's, 1995 - Jetset, 1996) is even more uncompromising: seven tracks of angular and abrasive noise-rock that hardly sizzle at all. After the relatively relaxed beginning ofTCR and the instrumental Mein Minefield Mine Landmine, guitarists Dave Jeffreys and Pat Marsden charge full speed with theirspastic imitation of Red Krayola and Faust. The15-minute blistering nightmare Flex is the tour de force, butEvery Night I'm Mentally Crucified better deserves the role ofcenterpiece, while Zen Nun Deb, with its nods to dark-punk, could bethe masterpiece.
After a long hiatus, Prolapse released The Italian Flag (Jetset, 1998),a collection of more mature and refined songs. The sound is less aggressive, more melodic. The main attraction is definitely the vocal harmonies, that offer the sharpestcontrast since male/female harmony was invented.Witness the waySteelyard's ethereal vocals duet with Derrick's punk neurosis inSlash Oblique.Derrick's pseudo-Clash punk emphasis detonates thesquare dance of Deanshanger while Steelyard croons innocently over abed of bagpipes. The narrative peak ought to be Flat Velocity Curve, where Derrick chatsin a conversational tone while Steelyard chants like a cross between adisco-diva and a fairy queen, their dialoguepropelled by a driving guitar raga. The underlying rhythm section is no less inventive, borrowing from differentidioms of blues, country, rock and roll and even ethnic music. The hammering pace that bridges all songs teals the show at least in thesoaring and psychedelic Return Of Shoes.
At her most angelic, Steelyard's sounds almost like Enya(Cacophony No A);at her most dramatic, she sounds likethe Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde(Killing The Bland). Her pure contralto embellishes the breezyBelly-esque Autocode, her witchyhowl pierces the voodoobilly of A Day At Death Seaside. Her growth is mirrored by the growth of the band as a whole. Each song can be said to be completely different from the others. The only drawback is that none of this very creative compositions stands outas a fully accomplished masterpiece.
Steelyard's charisma totally prevails onGhosts Of Dead Aeroplanes (Jetset, 1999)and somehow it manages to downplay the brutal dissonance of previous works.Essence Of Cessna, Cylinder V12 Beats Cylinder 8 andGovernment Of Spain are certainly not upbeat and certainly not uplifting, but they float lighter over the cacophony of the foundations.

What Does The Italian Flag Look Like
The group's line-up comprised: 'Scottish' Mick Derrick (vocals), Linda Steelyard (vocals), David Jeffreys (guitar), Patrick Marsden (guitar), 'Geordie' Mick Harrison (bass), Tim Pattison (drums), Donald Ross Skinner (keyboards).
Prolapse formed in the summer of 1991 under a table at Leicester Polytechnic's Friday night disco, 'With the aim of being the most depressing band ever', earned a cult following for their live set, particularly for the tension within songs such as 'Tina This Is Matthew Stone', which were not so much sung as acted to a musical accompaniment. In 1993 they released two EPs on Cherry Red Records, 'Crate' and 'Pull Thru Barker', followed in 1994 by the single 'Doorstop Rhythmic Bloc' and album Pointless Walks to Dismal Places, which won critical acclaim.[2] After leaving Cherry Red records, they then went on to release a variety of singles and EPs on a bewildering number of different labels.

In 1995, they released their second album backsaturday, which saw them experimenting with both repetitive grooves and ambient soundscapes.[3] The album was preceded by the single 'TCR', a fast-paced number which also featured on the subsequent US release of backsaturday. A remixed version of the 15-minute lead track 'Flex' was also later issued as a limited edition 12' titled 'Flexed'.
Their third album The Italian Flag (1997) was an eclectic 13-track tour de force which saw Prolapse pick up significant radio play for the first time, particularly for the lead single 'Killing The Bland' and its even more commercial-sounding follow-up 'Autocade', though neither single became a hit. The album returned to the more melodic approach of the first LP, though now with a harder guitar sound, but this time there was also a whole diverse array of styles, earning the band many favourable reviews.[4]
The final Prolapse LP was Ghosts of Dead Aeroplanes, released in 1999,[5] after which the group drifted apart. As of 2005, Mick Derrick was working as an archaeologist in Norway, Pat Marsden lived in nearby Denmark, drummer Tim played in MJ Hibbett & The Validators, Linda Steelyard was a reporter for the Leicester Mercury and David Jeffreys was a professor of art at Savannah College of Art and Design.
