What is the advantage of using MapSource?
I think the MapSource program is pretty much a 'must have'. In addition to the ability to load maps, the MapSource software has a lot of other capabilities, for example:

• Maybe you are lucky. Maybe you can have up till 6 maps on your phone at the same time eg. gmapbmap.img (Basemap), gmapprom.img (internal map, used when you have US or EU maps), gmapprom1.img (internal map, used when you have both US and EU maps), gmapsupp.img (Supplemental maps, will be overwritten when you add new maps), gmapsup2.img and gmapoem.img (For OEM Company). But with MapSource you can have many more! (The maximum amount of map-tiles for your unit is the limiting factor.) You just merge more maps together so they will appear as one file (gmapsupp.img) on your device
• See all the cities, selected map details and POIs on your computer;
• Set up routes and find out distances. Helps you get an overall picture;
• Create and transfer waypoints to your device;
• View and edit .GPX (POI) files;
• Backup your waypoints from your device to a database (*.gdb) file on your computer;
• Find the lat/long positions of waypoints;
• Add description comments to your favourites/waypoints, like addresses and phone numbers;
• Interact seamlessly with Google Earth

Prepare your Garmin-device, Mobile, PDA

  1. Install Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap: http://www8.garmin.com/software/Garm..emap_4xxxx.exe
  2. Install Garmin Mobile XT Support Files: http://www8.garmin.com/software/Garm..iles_4xxxx.exe
  3. Install the software for your phone, eg. Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 3rd Edition. If your phone uses a different OS find the correct Garmin software here.
  4. Execute GarminMobileXT.sis on your phone. It is located in the root of your phone or SD-card.
  5. Start the application.
  6. Select settings for text language, voice, unit and for Garmin Online.
  7. Exit the application.
  8. Open the file called GarminDevice.xml. It is located in the Garmin folder.
  9. Look for <Id>XXXXXXXXXX</Id>.
  10. Use the Keygenerator to generate an unlock key for the application, and save the key in a file called SW.UNL (not SW.UNL.txt) using Notepad. The file should be saved in the Garmin folder. As default Notepad will save your file as a text file! You have to choose “save as” and change the file name from .txt to ALL FILES.

  If you - after following the previous steps - start the application get a screen with 1) Purchase & Go!, 2) Begin Free Trial, 3) Enter Product Key, and 4) Connect to a Garmin GPS, then you have done something wrong! Did you save the file as 'just' sw.unl? Did you save it into the garmin folder? Try to use your phones filemanager to locate the file and check it is called sw.unl only.
  If your phone, after unlocking, is looking for a Bluetooth GPS and not the internal GPS go to TOOL > SETTING > SYSTEM > REMOTE GPS. Choose USE BUILT IN GPS > ENABLE it then click DONE.

Install MapSource
If you are NOT planning with running maps from the very darkest of Africa, you do not have to install both versions of MapSource – just install the latest one like this:

1. Download MapSource 6.15.11 from Garmin
2. Extract the content of MapSource_61511.exe (the file you downloaded in step 1) using WinRAR
3. Run msmain.msi
4. Run Setup.exe

If you are having problems unlocking the latest maps, use the patched version of MapSource 6.15.11, allowing you to save map-sets (.IMG) not only to SD-cards and Garmin-devices but to any of your local drives. If you want it, download it from here.
If you are planning with playing with older maps, homemade maps eg. maps not on this list – Install like this:

1. Download MapSource version 6.13.7
   It isn't compatible with the newest maps (2009 NT) from Garmin but it's the last MapSource version that provides you with the Unlock Wizard and also newer versions have compatibility issues with some free maps.
2. For a clean and fresh setup without any prior installation of MapSource
   1. Extract the content of MapSource_6137.exe (the file you downloaded in step 1) using WinRAR;
   2. From the extracted files, run MAIN.msi;
   3. Now run Setup.exe.
   If you don't follow these steps exactly as listed, MapSource will abort the setup-process with an 'Previous MapSource not found' error message.
3. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory where MapSource is located. (Probably C:Garmin)
4. Rename MapSource.exe into MapSource_6-13-7.exe
   If you want to have a localized version of MapSource you need to rename the corresponding .DLL too: In the same directory you'll find a lot of MapSourceXXX.dll files where XXX represents a language-code. (e.g. MapSourceRUS.dll = Russian, MapSourceDEU.dll = German, MapSourceESP.dll = Spanish, etc.). Pick the .DLL representing your language and rename it to MapSource_6-13-7XXX.dll (XXX being the language code) so you end up with e.g. MapSource_6-13-7RUS.DLL. Done.
5. The MapSource-installer has created shortcuts on your Desktop and in the Start-menu. You'll have to adjust them so that they
   • represent the MapSource version (renaming them from MapSource > Mapsource 6.13.7) and
   • point to the correct file (Properties > Link target)
   It's just a piece of cake to do that..
6. Now download MapSource 6.15.11 from Garmin and
7. install it. (Since you already have a installed version of MapSource you don't have to all the unpacking from above. Just run the .EXE)
8. There is a patched version of MapSource 6.15.11, allowing you to save map-sets (.IMG) not only to SD-cards and Garmin-devices but to any of your local drives. If you want it, download it from here.
9. Follow the above steps 3. - 5. accordingly to rename the file(s).
   Congratulations, you have two simultaneous installations of MapSource and can now enjoy all the features.

Install maps

1. Download the map you want;
2. Install the map using the file called something with XXXXXX_ENU.msi - Not the Setup.exe - This will install the map only (this applies to 'real' Garmin maps only – with other maps the file might just be called setup.exe);
3. Unlock the map:
   • Get a key generator which you can find here;
   • Enter your GPS ID number and enter your MapID (scroll down to “custom maps”) in the key generator, and you have the unlock-code.
   • Launch MapSource;
   • In MapSource, click Utilities > Manage Map Products;
   • Select the Unlock Regions tab, and click Add;
   • Enter your 25-character unlock code and then a comment, if desired. Click OK.

If you would like to have more maps, e.g. Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2009 and Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2009 you can combine the maps and transfer them to your GPS.

Use Basemaps

• What is a Basemap?
  A Basemap is a map with limited detail and precision.
• Limited? So, what it is good for?
  It serves two purposes:
  1. It gives you the possibility to navigate where none of you regular maps provides coverage.
  2. When you zoom out on your device it would take lots of processor power - and therefore time - to draw all the details of your regular map. Hence in such moments your device uses the Basemap.
• Isn't my device factory equipped with a Basemap?
  Yes, it is. Garmin sells their equipment with one of two preinstalled Basemaps: Americas lite or Atlantic lite.
• So why should I want different Basemap?
  The two pre-installed Basemaps are limited to their region. They don't provide you with world-wide coverage.
• But there is a WorldMap from Garmin. Why not use it instead?
  It has no autorouting.
• You convinced me. What shall I do?
  Follow these steps:
  1. Download the World-Wide routable Basemap v3.01 from the Garmin Website. (Here you can learn about the coverage.)
  2. Don't run the .EXE! Instead open it with - for example - WinRAR (Right-click).
  3. Navigate within the archive to the worldwide directory and extract the GMAPBMAP.IMG file to some place on your computer.
  4. Copy it into the garmin directory on your device.
• But this will delete my existing Basemap?! Shouldn't I save or keep it?
  Yes, that would forever delete your pre-installed Basemap. If you want to save or keep it you should either
  • copy the original file to your computer, a CD or a DVD for possible use in the future. (Backups are always a very good idea! and you should take the chance to make a backup of your entire device) or you
  • could rename the original Basemap to gmapoem.img and keep it parallel to the new basemap. Your device will handle the rest.
• The file I downloaded says iQue 3600. Can i really use it for my device?
  Yes, you can. The only devices you possibly wouldn't use it for are the new Garmin units with 3D terrain. But these are factory supplied with the Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap. (If you accidentally deleted it, you can download a copy, Garmin WW Autoroute DEM Basemap NR 3.00 - Image (29.01.2009), here.)
